It is not easy to choose just one thing to change about the world (there are many) but I think one of the most significant would be gay rights. There are several things that seem to be unfair when it comes to gays. For one thing, only a handful of states in the U.S. don’t have a law against gay marriage. That would be one thing that needs to change regarding this subject. I would also like straight people to accept gays into society. This, of course, would reduce the criticism against gay people, which I think is another large problem in relation to the topic.
Every day, whether it be on the internet or on the streets, people criticize gays. The joke about them, curse them, claim that they will burn for eternity, etc. I think that this is because of a lack of understanding. If people really knew more about it, particularly young people like me, then they would probably not make as many gay jokes that implied that being gay or lesbian was bad. If people understood what it meant, what it was, then they might just be slightly less negative toward it. But understanding will only happen when people accept that no matter what they do, there will always be people who love the same gender.
When people finally realize that there will always be gay people, then those gays will be accepted into society. That is another thing I would like to change. I would like straight people to accept, even welcome the out casted gays and lesbians into their society, not cast them farther outward. I know that I may sound a lot like Martin Luther King when I say this, but I have a dream that one day, a person will be able to tell their friends that they are gay, and those friends will not be repelled. Those friends will not be weirded out, or no longer be friends with that person. And it does sound like what Martin Luther King said. But that’s okay, because Martin Luther King made a difference. And in a lot of ways, this is just like those times, when he wished that blacks would one day walk with whites, marry whites, go to the same schools, restaurants, etc. Look around you and see how successful that became, how different it is now than it was back in 1950. Imagine a world where the gays are accepted. Where you see a gay person and you don’t even think about it anymore than you do when you see a black person. Imagine that. Imagine a time when you don’t even think about two people of the same gender getting married, because it’s normal.
One of the most well-known problems regarding gay rights is gay and lesbian marriage. In a lot of countries and states, same-sex marriage is not legal. Why is that? You will have to answer that yourself, because I haven’t the slightest idea. I suppose it’s the same reason that way back when, people would repel at the thought of the marriage of a black person and a white person. I would like to change that almost more than anything else. I would love for gays and lesbians to be able to get married anywhere they want. Any state, any country, and province, any continent that they want. It should not be illegal anywhere. Just like a man and a woman getting married is legal everywhere. Why should a man and a man getting married be any different? Is it that they have the same sets of chromosomes? “Oh no, we can’t let two people get married if they both have XX chromosomes! And don’t even TALK about if they both have XY!” Why would that make sense? Again, I don’t know, you’ll have to find out on your own.
Overall, I think that gay rights are a very important problem in the world that MUST be changed. And if I could, I would allow gay marriage, end criticism about gays, and have everyone accept gays into society.
